FUM rolls out nutrition project in Likoma

Farmers Union of Malawi (FUM) has embarked on a nutrition project in Likoma to address stunted growth and malnutrition in the district.

Speaking on Monday when he introduced the project to the District Executive Committee Meeting, FUM project coordinator Caswel Kachingwe said they want to strengthen the capacity of local civil society organisations (CSOs) and their networks to advocate for increased demand for food fortification.

“After a successful implementation of the project, FUM expects a reduction in the number of malnourished and stunted children through enhanced uptake of micronutrients,” he said.

On his part, Likoma district director of administration and human resources Moses Jere welcomed the project.

He said the council will

ensure that the District Nutrition Coordinating Committee works with the partners to ensure its sustainability.

“We have a committee responsible for nutrition issues. So our eyes will be on it. The committee works with partners and reports to the district commissioner for us to track progress,” said Jere.

Likoma CSO Network chairperson Davy Kacholola pledged to work in partnership with the council and the implementing partners to ensure people benefit from the project.

With funding from the European Union, FUM will work with its partner We Effect in implementing the project which is running from January 2025 to December 2029.

A resident John Moyo said the project will help address stunting among children.

“If we want to have brilliant children, then we should give them nutritious foodstuffs to develop fully,” he said
